Congratulations to Our 2020 Graduates

June 19, 2020

Dear graduates 2020,

The School of Computer Science would like to express its most heartfelt Congratulations!

Computer Science has experienced unprecedented growth in the last years, and our graduating class is larger than it has ever been. You are over 200 students, who are now proud owners of a degree that involves Computer Science, be it in one of our computer science majors or honors programs, in a joint program with a different discipline, or a MSc. or PhD in Computer Science.

Computer Science is an exciting field because new developments are so rapid, and it has such an impact on so many aspect of our lives. We hope that we were able to give you the education that you need to contribute not only at the highest level in this thriving field but also in a responsible way.

Graduating from McGill is quite an achievement and  the School of Computer Science is proud of every single one of you. It has been an honor working with you over the years. We are aware that your studies at McGill did not finish in a way that you expected. Having worked so hard and successfully for your degree, we would have loved to see you walk across the stage, and applaud each of you personally. We really hope that this will happen in an in-person ceremony in 2021.

We also hope that we will be able to stay in contact. In fact, next year, not only will McGill turn 200, but the young School of Computer Science will celebrate its 50th birthday, and we sincerely hope that we can celebrate it together with many of you.

And with this, we wish you all the best on your future paths.

Message to the graduating undergraduates Class 2020 from the Co-Chair for Undergraduate Affair

Dear all,

We are sending our warmest congratulations to all of you -- wherever you are presently located. ---

We hope that you take a moment to celebrate your achievement and be proud of what you've accomplished. Especially with the present COVID-19 pandemic, we have to find new ways to celebrate and cherish our little and big milestones with friends and family close by and far away.

Too often, we get caught up in the moment. Time moves on and the next adventure already awaits. Hence, we too often do not take time to look back and reflect on how far we've come, who helped along the way, who inspired us to succeed, and who made a difference in our studies and personal lives. Often, it's the small things that have made a big impact.

We would like to invite you to take a moment to reflect on your time at McGill and Montreal. If you like, write a note of thanks or appreciation to another member of the McGill community who has helped you reach this great personal achievement. Or, become a mentor to other fellow computer science students in Fall and share your perspective and experience with your fellow students:

Next year, the School of Computer Science will also celebrate its 50th anniversary! We would like to invite you to reconnect with us in 2021, to celebrate your past achievements at the graduation ceremony in 2021, and share with us your next milestones. Sign up to get more updates on the event:

We are wishing you all the best for the future. As you transition to your next adventure, we encourage you to reflect on the larger implications software technology has on all aspects of our lives. As computer scientists we are not only responsible for building the technology around us, but we are also in a unique position to ensure that society considers these larger implications and its vast impact.

So, caps off to you, graduates! This is only the beginning.

Best wishes,

Brigitte Pientka and Joseph Vybihal

Message to the graduating Msc/Phd Class of 2020 from the Chairs for Msc and Phd Committee

Dear Graduates,

We would like to take this opportunity to extend our warmest congratulations to you on your graduation day. Today, you would have received a PhD or MSc degree as a result of several years of hard work and many sacrifices you made.

It is a pity that we could not celebrate this day the way we normally do in years gone by due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this day is no less significant. It remains special as ever and additionally symbolizes your resolve to continue your dreams no matter all the hardships a global pandemic brings with it, which makes this day even more special.

Next year, the School of Computer Science will also celebrate its 50th anniversary! We would like to invite you to reconnect with us in 2021. Sign up to get more updates on the event:

We want to wish you all the best as you transition into the next phase of your life. We are confident that the McGill experience is going to serve you very well as it has served countless others before you as you take on larger adventures in your way forward. All the best graduates!
